Trust

Ironically, our pastor spoke about John 14 today. This is the passage I wrote about in my previous blog called: Ask. “You can choose to trust God when you are troubled,” was his exhortation. He also mentioned that when you trust God it does not guarantee that your distressing emotions are going to disappear.

As I think about what he shared, I believe that there are many times that trusting God makes us feel very uncomfortable. Giving in to our compulsions or our addictions feels good at the time. Ask an addict how it feels when they trust God and stop taking drugs. Detox does not feel good. Ask someone with OCD how it feels when they choose to trust God and not give in to their rituals. It feels scary and miserable. Time and dilligent obedience lessen the feelings of discomfort, but it is not an easy path.

The broad path says, “Do what makes you feel good. Do what is comfortable and convenient.” The narrow path says, “Trust God and he will help you walk through the pain.” Satan tempts us to avoid difficulties while Christ invites us to walk with him through the difficulties.

What difficulties have you been avoiding?

What would it look like to trust God with that difficulty?

Hello Heavenly Father,

I like comfort. I want to feel good. Words like suffering and pain are not my friends. The broad path is soooo inviting. It tempts me to walk on it’s flat and lush lane to easy street. But I know where that path leads . . . bondage and destruction.

You invite me to climb the steep mountains with you. You reach your hand out and beckon me to walk with you up the path of sanctificition.

Which path will I choose?

I choose to climb with You!
