Caught in the Sun

What does sunshine and earthworms have to do with lies we believe about God?

The sidewalk is dry and the sun is hot. My daughter, Julia, was in preschool at the time. She notices numerous earthworms covering our path. The worms have been dried by the sun and litter the ground with their dehydrated forms. There are so many of them that one cannot help but step on their crunchy remains.

“Mommy, why are there so many worms?” asks my inquisitive child.

“The worms like the water and when it rains they come out of their holes to play. Sometimes they play too long on the sidewalk and then the hot sun dries them up,” I reply. Not a highly scientific explanation, but one that makes sense to me.

Julia is sad for the poor worms. What a pity they died because they played too long in the sun. Despite these feelings of sympathy, she still enjoys the crackly sound they make under her shoes.

For years Julia believed my explanation for this event in nature. Not until she was much older did she discover the true reason for this phenomenon. The truth is that the worms are not playing in the rain, they are squirming out of their flooded homes to find new homes. Theirs is a dash for survival, not a playdate in the rain.

What things do we believe as true, only to discover later that we were believing a lie?

What lies are we believing about God?

“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us” (Tozer).

Sometimes we think that God will love us more if we are more productive. Perhaps if we make sure to read our Bible, show kindness to our family, serve in the church, and live a good life, God will love us more. Is this true?

God’s Word says, “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8)

God loves us no matter how much or how little we check off our to-do-list.

God loves us not matter how successful or unsuccessful we are at work.

Your worth is not based on well you perform. God delights in you because you are his child.

Soak in that truth next time you mess up.

Is Joseph’s artwork perfect? Would it win awards in an art contest? Why is this simple drawing precious to me? Because it was made by my child.

You are God’s masterpiece. Let the warmth of that statement shine down into your soul.

Good Evening Abba Father,

We often feel shame for the times we have failed. Our mistakes loom over our heads like thick clouds of rain. Shine the truth of your love into our hearts. Break us free from the lies that hold us captive. Wrap us in your arms of grace and remind us how precious we are to you.
