The Full Picture

How often do we jump to conclusions before we have the full picture? What steps can we take to prevent making hasty judgements?

Scholastic Children’s Dictionary

Joseph sits in front of our laptop, clicking circles for the social studies exam. He must use a map to determine the approximate distance between two large cities. Feeling perplexed by this question, he asks for help. As I look at the computer screen, I realize he cannot see the full picture of the map. The critical piece of information he needs is missing. After scrolling down, we see the map scale.

“You can’t answer the question until you see the whole picture,” I explain to him.

Reflecting on this experience, I think of how often I jump to conclusions before I have the full picture. How often do I make judgements on others’ actions before I have all the facts?

Proverbs 18:13: He who answers a matter before he hears it–this is folly and disgrace to him. To answer before listening— that is folly and shame. “Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish. If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.”https://biblehub.com/proverbs/18-13.htm

What can I do about this problem?

1.Take time to ponder

2. Ask more questions to get a bigger picture of what is going on.

How many problems would be avoided in our lives if we waited till we have the full picture of a situation before we speak?

Good Evening Heavenly Father,

I often jump to conclusions before I get the full picture of a situation. Help me to pause and ponder before I speak. Give me Your eyes to see people as You see them. Forgive me for being judgemental and harsh. May I see others with Your eyes of compassion, so that the hurting world might experience Your love through me.
