Eulogy

What will people say about us at our funeral?

Two funerals on the same day. One for a recovering addict, the other for a faithful missionary. Both men loved Jesus. Both men enjoyed serving others. Both men are together today standing in the presence of the Savior, who loves both the recovering addict and the faithful missionary.

What will people say about you and me at our funeral? Will they tell of how we prayed for them when they were hurting? Did we take the time to visit them when they were sick? Did we pause from our busy lives to listen to their stories of pain?

Sean and I have discussed our season of life. Our goal is to finish well. How many a faithful believer gets waylaid on the path to the celestial city by besetting sins such as complacency, selfishness, and discouragement? I don’t want to end my time on earth in one of those pits. I want my eulogy to say: “She had her Father’s eyes,” eyes that see the suffering of others and respond with compassion.

Currently, my eyes are a very mixed bag of emotions. During power struggles with my 10-year-old, my eyes flash with lightning bolts of wrath. When an event reminds me of my trauma, my eyes open wide with fear. More times than I’d like to admit, my eyes convey dark emotions like jealousy and bitterness instead of warmth and acceptance.

But change is possible. God is at work in my life.

A friend recently encouraged me with these words: “I love your honesty, vulnerability . . . . Although you may see the muck of what life brings, but from my perspective, I see such beauty coming from those hard places like a bud blossoming after a hard winter.”

Prayer

Hello Father God,

My days on earth are coming to a close. How many years-10, 20, 30? I want to finish well. How ironic that often the older and wiser one becomes, the less they are able to do physically. Perhaps less ability to do things physically forces us to spend more time in prayer.

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12

Until You call me home, I want my light to burn bright for my Jesus!
