Jelly Bread

What does jelly bread have to do with spiritual warfare?

Jelly Bread

A large loaf of sourdough bread sits on the kitchen counter. With a long serrated knife, I slice the warm loaf and slather it with butter. Deciding to indulge my sweet tooth, I spread a ruby red strawberry jam over the top. Sitting on the kitchen stool, I bite into my nostalgic delight.

Jelly bread was a tradition in my home. After finishing our meal, we looked forward to this sweet treat. Can you see me sitting at the table with my four cousins, each of us holding a slice of white bread covered in butter and grape jelly?

As I write this blog, a vivid memory comes to mind. It is of a children’s book about a town that had a big problem with swarms of wasps. The town decided to work together by creating a large loaf of bread- a loaf that was as big as a house. The whole town mixed, baked, pulled and pushed, and sawed the huge slice of bread. Then they slathered the bread with jelly and waited for the bugs to come. When the army of flying insects descended on the jelly bread, the townspeople dropped another slice of bread on top of the wasps and trapped them in the huge sandwich of sticky jelly.

What inspires me about this children’s story is the theme of unity. The town had a big problem-a problem too big for one person to handle. The citizens of the town found a creative solution and worked together to destroy their foe.

What Bible story reflects this idea? The book of Nehemiah tells of the entire Jewish community working together to repair the walls of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 3-4 NIV). Repairing a broken wall is a difficult task, especially when your enemies are attacking you while you work.

What problems are you facing today?

Are you experiencing spiritual warfare in the midst of your battle?

How can the body of Christ help you be victorious?

Scripture

Two are better than one,

because they have a good return for their labor:

If either of them falls down,

one can help the other up.

But pity anyone who falls

and has no one to help them up.

Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.

But how can one keep warm alone?

Though one may be overpowered,

    two can defend themselves.

A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 NIV

Prayer

Father God,

Thank you for fond memories like eating jelly bread with my cousins and reading silly books like The Giant Jam Sandwich. Who would have thought that I would be writing a blog about these nostalgic delights?

God, I think you must be doing a healing work in my life, because lately You have been reminding me of all sorts of memories from my past. Does this happen to other people who are going through trauma therapy?

Songs, colors, art projects, books, food. . . . I wonder what memory God will bring to mind next? I give this healing process over to you. You are my Wonderful Counselor, and I am learning to trust Your gentle touch in my life.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen

Shout out to Amber for the delicous loaf of bread she made. Amber Dawn- You are my sunshine girl!
