The Joy of Letting Go

Time to let go of unhealthy thinking patterns.

A common topic during therapy is cognitive distortions.

Cognitive distortions are irrational thoughts that shape how you see the world, how you feel, and how you act. It’s normal to have these thoughts occasionally, but they can be harmful when frequent or extreme.”

Here are some examples:

Catastrophizing: Seeing only the worst possible outcomes of a situation.”

Jumping to conclusions: Interpreting the meaning of a situation with little or no evidence.”1

I am quick to pick up on people’s emotions by their body language. If I notice that someone looks upset, I will often think it is because of something I did. My mind will jump to all sorts of conclusions and then start ruminating on the worst possible outcomes. Can you relate to this dilemma?

The first step of letting go is to identify these cognitive distortions. Now that I am aware of my irrational thinking patterns, I can make progress in replacing them with truth.

Time to let go of unhealthy thinking patterns. I wish once I let go of them, they would stay away, but they seem to keep following me like a scary shadow. In order to heal, I need lots of prayer, and that is one of the reasons I write these blogs. Thank you for walking with me on this journey!

I encourage you to click on the link below and discover the other cognitive distortions. May this information be helpful to your own healing journey.

Trauma therapy can feel very lonely at times. So few understand the pain-filled journey. But Jesus knows and understands me completely. He fights for me. He longs to do the same for you!

“For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor. . .”
(Isaiah 9:6 NIV)

Song: tune from Les Miserables “On My Own”

My version called “Not Alone” Dedicated to Christ, my Wonderful Counselor.
