A massacre is taking place. The ruler is slaughtering the innocent for political power. One woman runs toward the battle. She knows the risks: she could be accused of treason, considered an enemy to the throne, and annihilated with all the other heirs in the royal family. Jehosheba, a princess and wife of the priest, hides the only remaining heir to the throne- an infant and descendant of King David.
Most likely you have never heard of her. Her name, Jehosheba, is foreign and unusual. But God used this one brave woman to save a dynasty.
What do we know about Jehosheba? She was a princess, daughter of King Joram and the wife of Jehoiada, the priest. She lived during the reign of the wicked Queen Athaliah, daughter of Queen Jezebel. Queen Athaliah usurped the throne of Judah after the death of her son, Ahaziah. To ensure her power, she ordered that all the royal offspring be destroyed. This meant she was killing her own grandchildren!
During the dismal six years of her reign, hope seemed lost. But Jehosheba knew that a small flame of hope shone in a secret place. A child, who would one day be king, lived quietly in the house of the Lord for six years. In God’s time, this little ray of hope would be revealed, and the nation would know that God’s promises were sure even during the darkest of days.
The rest of the story is recorded in 2 Kings 11. It is an epic tale worthy of your time.
We, too, are in days of darkness. We wonder when our Savior will return and set all things right. Will we sink into the mire of despondency, or will we remember that “No matter what the news, the purpose of the Lord shall stand?”(quote from World Watch)
Are you discouraged by all the bad news?
What steps can you take to stay hopeful during such dark days?
I choose to be like Jehosheba and run toward the battle with my little candle of hope. Care to join me?
Matthew 5:16 “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Prayer
Good Evening Father God,
We feel sad by all the bad things happening in our world. Your heart is sad, too. Thank you for women of faith like Jehosheba and her example of courage. Give us courage to face our fears and fight against the darkness. We hold out our candles into the night and trust that you will use us to bring hope to those who are lost and hurting.
In Jesus’ name we pray,
Amen
Praying that your heart is filled with hope.
