A Small Step

What problem are you facing today? Do you feel like you are climbing Mt. Everest? What small step do you need to take to move forward?

Hiking uphill is one of my least favorite activities, especially if it is a long hill. My husband often encourages me to take small steps. He says that you can keep a steady pace and conserve your energy by taking small steps when you have a hill to climb.

Counseling is like climbing a long, steep slope. I want to push through and get this painful process over as fast as possible. Like a child who stuffs their mouth with broccoli, hoping they can gulp down the dreaded vegetable fast enough that it misses their taste buds, I want to charge up the dreaded slope of trauma therapy and get it over with ASAP. But healing from trauma takes time, and small steps are necessary on the path to wholeness.

What problem are you facing today? Do you feel like you are climbing Mt. Everest? What small step do you need to take to move forward?

Journaling is a small step you can take to help you heal. I am often encouraged by rereading my blogs and remembering the truths God has taught me on this journey to wholeness. Those truths are like the stones that God told his people to take from the Jordan River and make a memorial. The pile of stones reminded them how God stopped the waters so that they could pass over into the promised land (Joshua 4).

God promised his people that he would drive out their enemies “little by little”(Exodus 23:30). He will do the same for us. He will remove the enemies of fear and doubt, little by little, as we learn to trust him. We will increase in courage. We will grow in strength. We will inherit a new land of hope.

Verse for the day: Exodus 23:30

“Little by little I will drive them out from before you, until you have increased, and you inherit the land.”

Good Evening Father,

There are times that I look up at the hill of brokenness and think that it cannot be climbed. My emotional legs ache, and my spiritual lungs burn with pain. Yet you encourage me to take small steps. You remind me that step-by-step, you are walking with me up this mountain, and by your strength, we will overcome it together. Thank you for walking with me through this difficult journey. I pray for all those who read this blog, that you would fill them with hope as they climb their own mountains.
