Samaria is under seige. King Ben-hadad proclaims: “Your silver and gold are mine; your most beautiful wives and children are also mine. . . May the gods do so to me and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people who follow me.”
“Let not him who girds on his armor boast like him who takes it off,” replies the king of Samaria.
A prophet approaches the king of Samaria and says, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, I will deliver them into your hand today, and you shall know that I am the Lord.'”(I Kings 20)
A mighty battle ensues; God gives victory to Samaria over their enemies, and Ben-hadad, king of Aram, flees for his life.
A servant to king Ben-hadad shares his counsel: “Their gods are gods of the mountains; therefore they were stronger than we; but rather let us fight them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.”
God speaks to the king of Samaria through his prophet and declares: “Because the Arameans have said, ‘The Lord is the god of the mountains, but He is not the God of the valleys;’ therefore I will give this great multitude into your hand, and YOU SHALL KNOW THAT I AM THE LORD.” (I Kings 20)
When you’re in the valley of despair and your problems loom large, remember the Lord is the God of the hills and valleys. Stand firm and wait to see God perform a mighty victory against your adversary.
Prayer
Father God,
You are not limited by geographical obstacles, emotional valleys, or financial mountains. You meet us where we are and strengthen us to face the foe.
When pain persists and we wonder if we have been forgotten, remind us that you see our suffering and hear our prayers. Help us to trust in Your love even when we don’t see the answers we had hoped for coming our way.
Hold us tight and carry our battered faith till we reach the end of the tunnel of doubt.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen
