While listening to Pastor Joe Focht teach on Jeremiah, a vivid image fills my mind. I see a pile of bright blue chalk dust. What is the purpose of this blue powdered chalk? A tool from my past appears on the screen of my brain. The tool that looks like this:

During my teen years, I used this tool to help in our building projects. The chalk reel contains a string that is covered in blue powdered chalk. It is used to help create a straight line that is a guide for carpenters.
When Sean returns from work, I share with him about this memory.
“Did you say you were listening to Jeremiah chapters 9-10?” he asks.
“Yes,” I reply.
Sean shares about the verses he has been memorizing from that portion of Scripture:
“This is what the Lord says:
‘Let not the wise boast of their wisdom
or the strong boast of their strength
or the rich boast of their riches,
24 but let the one who boasts boast about this:
that they have the understanding to know me,
that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness,
justice and righteousness on earth,
for in these I delight,’
declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 9: 23-24 NIV
Is there a connection between the chalk line and this passage?
Reflection
The chalk line keeps a building project in proper alignment. This passage can be used as a spiritual chalk line. Am I boasting about myself or about my Creator? How well do I know Him? Do I delight in the things that bring Him joy: kindness, justice, and righteousness?
Prayer
Father God,
Should you use Your chalk line on my spiritual house, I’m afraid that it would show how crooked my frame has become. Teach me to find joy in the things that delight Your heart. May my speech be filled with boastings about You and the marvelous things You have done. Draw me closer to Yourself that I may know You better.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
Shout-out to Joseph’s basketball team for their first win of the season. Keep up the good work!
