On a bright spring day, I drove to Mt. Gretna to enjoy a day of hiking. Inspired to take a picture, I parked the van and crossed the road to the water’s edge. Something was wrong. Something was missing. In front of me lay a row of canoes, but the water was gone! The once scenic lake stood naked, its muddy bottom exposed for all the world to see. What is going on?
Returning to the van, I grabbed my phone and did a search for the answer. But wait, maybe I should give you time to guess the reason why? Can you guess why the water is missing?
The correct answer is: “The lake is drained each spring to permit maintenance, inspection, and repair of the lake structures after the winter season” (mtgretnalake.com)
Has God ever drained your lake? Have you ever felt exposed and naked, your faults on display for the world to see? We do our best to hide our problems. On the surface, we look like we’ve got it all together. But what is going on underneath? Is it possible that bitterness is brewing and rotting our internal structures? Could there be jealousy decaying the foundations? Perhaps unforgiveness lurks beneath?
What does God need to do to help us face these issues that we tend to hide or ignore? He will allow a season of trials. He will bring to light those things that are lurking beneath. Why? Because he wants to heal us; he wants to make us whole.
Remember the story of the woman caught in adultery? Her sin was exposed for all to see. Notice how Jesus responded to her. Did he berate her? Did he add to her shame? Did he condemn her to be stoned?
Jesus saw her as a person. Jesus, unlike her accusers, knew everything about her. He understood her pain. He knew why she was so desperate. He also saw her potential to be free from her bondage. She had looked to men to satisfy the aching of her heart. Now Jesus wanted her to change her focus.
Picture the scene: The accusers leave one by one. The ground is littered with the rocks they once held to stone her. It is just Jesus and the woman. All her focus is on His words:
“Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?”
She said, “No one, Lord,”
And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more” (John 8:10-11)
My dear sister in Christ, focus on those words. When the evil one accuses you today of your sins from the past, focus on Jesus’ precious words: “Neither do I condemn you!”
When the trials of life leave you feeling naked and exposed, turn your focus onto the Words of the Savior. Allow him to bring to light those things hiding beneath the surface. He wants to repair the wounded parts. He wants you to be made whole.
Heavenly Father,
We need you to go beneath the surface and heal our broken parts. We have tried to fix them ourselves, but it is not working. Thank you for walking with us during this season of brokenness. Help us to focus on your truth of who we are and not focus on the words of the accuser.
Your word says that if we confess our sins YOU ARE FAITHFUL and just to forgive us our sins and to CLEANSE US FROM ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS. I John 1:9
In Jesus’ name we pray,
Amen
