Memory 2026
A piercing siren blares through the terminal as the white lights flash from the walls. “A fire has been detected in the building!” The message repeats every few minutes over the loud speaker, but no one is exiting the building, and no one seems concerned. An airport staff member informs our family that it is only a drill as she calmly walks past us.
“How long has this been going on?” I ask the security guard who checks our passports.
“For about 20 minutes,” he replies.
Our family finds the correct gate as the fire warning continues to sound throughout the airport. How long must we wait till the drill stops?
Going to the airport has changed a lot since I was young. Remember when you could stroll to your gate without all the hassle of so many security checks?
Security is a hot topic these days. We desire security while we travel. We desire security for our borders. Security is a primary need, especially in our formative years of childhood.
What happens to the mind of a child who experiences trauma in their formative years and lacks the primary need of security? See previous post: The Fire Alarm
Disclaimer: I do not agree with all the statements made in this video, but the therapist does an excellent job of showing how trauma changes the brain.
The brain of a trauma survior changes. It continues to send signals to the rest of the body that the person is in danger. It is hard for trauma survivors to relax and trust others because their brain is stuck in high alert. The good news is that God created our brains to be able to change. The word for this amazing ability is neuroplasticity.
I have noticed this change in my own healing journey. At the beginning of the journey when asked how I felt, I often chose the phrase: “I am not safe.” My brain was stuck in a high alert mode, and my emotions reflected this fear state. Now my emotions have settled down and I am less reactive. I praise God for the good work He is doing in my life!
Scripture talks about this process of renewing our minds.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (NIV Rom. 12:2)
Prayer
Good morning Abba Father,
Science confirms that your Word is true. You are an amazing creator. You made our brains to protect us during trauma, and You made them to be able to heal once the danger is over. I thank you for the healing work you are doing in my life. I am thankful that you are renewing my mind and restoring my soul. I pray that you would use my life to point others to You as our source of healing.
